The President of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), H.E Hon Chief Fortune Charumbira attended an African Union (AU) High-Level Ministerial Dinner on the implementation of the Green Recovery Action Plan (AU GRAP) 2021-2027, adopted by the AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government in February 2022.

The event took place on the sidelines of the ongoing 27th annual Conference of the Parties to the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change - better known as COP27 - being held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.

The PAP President is leading efforts to ensure that parliaments play a central role in the implementation of decisions aimed at curbing the impact of climate on the continent. The High-Level event served as a platform for the leader of the continental Parliament, accompanied by his delegation in Sharm el-Sheikh, to stress the PAP’s readiness to accompany the African agenda on climate change as the continent continues its recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.

The AU Green Recovery Action Plan aims to tackle the combined challenges of the COVID-19 recovery and climate change, by focusing on critical areas of joint priority, including climate finance, renewable energy, resilient agriculture, resilient cities, land use and biodiversity.

The African Union Commission (AUC) has appealed for the PAP’s support in strengthening collaboration on a broad range of shared priorities in support of the African Union’s objectives for the Continent’s sustainable and green recovery from COVID-19. H.E Hon. Charumbira has pledged the PAP’s commitment to supporting the realisation of a shared vision for a prosperous, secure, inclusive and innovative future for Africa.

A delegation of the PAP, led by the President of the institution, is taking part in COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh to ensure that the continent's interests as well as the aspirations of Africans, especially women and the youth, are better represented in climate negotiations.
