Pan-African Parliament Condemns Coup D’ Etat in Niger

The Pan-African Parliament (PAP), has been closely monitoring the situation in the Republic of Niger which has, regrettably, evolved into brazen coup d’ etat by the military.

His Excellency, the President, Chief Fortune Zephania Charumbira, the Bureau and the entire membership of the Pan-African Parliament, were harbouring the hope that the Nigerien Army would stand on the right side of history and force the renegade coup conspirators to respect the sacred will of the people of Niger by reinstating the democratically elected government led by His Excellency, President Mohamed Bazoum.

Sadly, notwithstanding growing condemnation of the renegade group’s actions, the Nigerien Army, which ought to defend the will of the people, has elected to support this shameless unconstitutional change of a democratically elected government.

The PAP President strongly rejects the unlawful seizure of power and calls for the immediate restoration of constitutional order. He further calls on the coup instigators to preserve the physical integrity of His Excellency, President Bazoum and his family and avoid any unnecessary loss of lives.

His Excellency, President Charumbira conveys the Pan-African Parliament’s readiness to support any ECOWAS and African Union-led initiatives aimed at restoring stability and reinstating the democratically elected government of President Bazoum, in tandem with the will of the people of Niger.
