The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, today held a working meeting with the 6th Bureau of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), led by its President, H.E. Fortune Charumbira, at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa.
The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration between the Commission and the Pan-African Parliament to ensure the timely and effective implementation of decisions of the AU policy organs relating to Pan-African Parliament. Particular emphasis was placed on electoral processes and the overall institutional framework required to enable the Parliament to operate optimally.
The Chairperson of the Commission commended the Pan-African Parliament for its active participation in the recently concluded 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government, as well as for the support it provided to the Commission.
He reaffirmed the critical role of the Pan-African Parliament within the African Union’s institutional architecture, describing it as a cornerstone for ensuring the direct participation of African peoples in decision-making and advancing continental economic integration.
In his capacity as the Chief Executive Officer and Legal Representative of the Union, the Chairperson assured the PAP Bureau of the Commission’s commitment to implementing all decisions aimed at strengthening the Parliament and providing it with the resources required to effectively discharge its mandate.
For his part, the President of the Pan-African Parliament welcomed the frank and open dialogue initiated by the Chairperson on enhancing the Parliament’s capacity and performance within the Union’s architecture. He underscored the need for structured, regular, and direct engagement between the Pan-African Parliament and the Office of the Chairperson, in line with the Parliament’s status and the Chairperson’s role in representing the interests of the Union.
President Charumbira reaffirmed the Pan-African Parliament’s commitment to working closely with the Commission in advancing the key aspirations of Agenda 2063.
