H.E. Chief Fortune Charumbira, President of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), delivered a solidarity statement at the University of South Africa (UNISA) in honor of the late Namibian founding President, Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma.

Addressing a gathering of dignitaries, scholars, and Pan-African leaders, H.E. Chief Charumbira underscored the enduring legacy and exemplary leadership of President Nujoma as a champion of African unity, resilience, and self-determination.

The leader of the Continental Parliament described President Nujoma as a leader whose vision extended beyond Namibia, shaping the broader African liberation struggle. “He was driven by the true spirit of unity, that I am because we are, and that is very important”, Hon. Chief Charumbira emphasized. “It is people like him that brought us to where we are today”.

He highlighted the instrumental role the revered revolutionary played in the realization of African

institutions such as the Pan-African Parliament, which serves as a platform for continental discourse

and policymaking. “These are the people that brought about the Pan-African Parliament, which we

enjoy today and we lead,” H.E. Chief Charumbira noted, acknowledging President Nujoma's contributions to fostering Africa’s collective aspirations.

In a stirring call to action, the Pan-African Parliament President challenged African leaders to embody the same resilience and unwavering commitment displayed by President Nujoma. “If we had such men on this continent today, would we have the problems we are facing? This is a big problems we are fighting against ourselves, and of course, the outsiders will make it worse”, he said, stressing the need for bold, united leadership to address Africa’s pressing challenges.

He further commended the Republic of South Africa’s recent stance on global justice issues, particularly its decision to take a stand in international courts. However, he lamented the hesitation of some African nations to openly support their counterparts due to external influences. “How many of us have stood up openly?”, challenged the Pan-African Parliament President.

As he concluded, Chief Charumbira made a passionate plea for Africa to rediscover the

quality of leadership exemplified by President Nujoma. “Today, we don’t have the same quality and

competency of leadership on this continent. May he rest in peace”.

The memorial service, held on February 26, 2025, at the University of South Africa (UNISA) in

Pretoria brought together a distinguished gathering of leaders and dignitaries, reflecting the profound impact of President Nujoma’s legacy across Africa, and members of the non-aligned movement.
