The Pan-African Parliament (PAP) Women’s Caucus is currently at the African Union (AU) Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for an information and advisory mission.
In line with the Caucus’s 2022 Action Plan, the mission seeks to strengthen the collaborative links with AU organs dealing with gender issues and women and identify priority sectors of intervention which will inform the Women’s Caucus strategic plan for the period 2023 to 2026.
The team led by Hon. Amina Tidjani Yaya (Chad), Chairperson of the PAP Women’s Caucus, will also seize the opportunity to be acquainted with AU programmes including the African Union strategy on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) 2018-2028. Members of the PAP delegation will further engage on the legal, policy and institutional responses to violence against Women and Girls, especially in the context of the Men’s Conference of Heads of State and Government on ending violence against Women and Girls.
Hon. Yaya says that the mission hopes to secure the support and engagement of the Women, Gender, Development and Youth Directorate, the African Women Leaders Network (AWLN) and the AUC Chairperson’s Special Envoy on Women, Peace, and Security into the activities of the Women’s Caucus.
Additionally, the information and advisory mission of the Women’s Caucus to Addis Ababa serves as a preparatory exercise for the upcoming Pan-African Parliament Conference on Women’s Rights under the theme: “Women empowerment and inclusion in governance”. The conference will take place on 3 November 2022 on the sidelines of the First Ordinary Session of the Sixth Parliament.
The PAP delegation is comprised of Hon. Caroline Kamusiime (Uganda), 1st Vice Chairperson of the Women Caucus, Hon. Victoria Kingston (Malawi), 2nd Vice Chairperson of the Women’s Caucus; and supported by Mrs Wawa Dahab Josiane Mbogo, Senior Assistant Clerk of the Parliament.
The mission is scheduled to hold engagements with H.E. Monique Nsanzabaganwa, Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission; H.E. Ambassador Minata Samaté Cessouma, Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development, African Union Commission; Ms. Bineta Diop, Special Envoy of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission on Gender, Peace and Security; Mme Ngwenya Nonkululeko Prudence, Ag. Director of Women, Gender, Development and Youth Directorate (WGDY); and Mr. Mabingué Ngom, Director, and Chief of the Office UNFPA, ECA Office.
