Members of the Pan African Parliament have, since August 22 at the Strategic Reorientation workshop for Members of Parliament, been interacting with, getting an appreciation and understanding of roles played by various African Union arms.
One such engagement has been with the African Governance Architecture (AGA) which is a platform for dialogue between the various stakeholders who are mandated to promote good governance. This interaction is part of efforts meant to revive, renew, reposition and reinvigorate the PAP.
Head of AGA, Amb Salah Hammad unpacked this African Union division for Members of Parliament:
"We have been entrusted with the mandate to strengthen democracy in Africa, in addition to translating the objectives of the legal and policy pronouncements in the AU Shared Values. AGA also seeks to accelerate the ratification, domestication, implementation and monitoring of African Shared Value instruments."
AGA has been generating information on democratic governance practices and dissemination of the same. It has also emerged as one of the vehicles for citizens’ engagement. This engagement strategy targets mainstreaming youth, women, media and civil society in democratic governance processes.
The PAP Members of Parliament continue various high-level engagements in Midrand, South Africa until September 2 and will also hold meetings of the PAP permanent committees. The interactions have managed to unpack the continent's developmental blueprint, Agenda 2063 and synergies have been identified and strengthened. The PAP has committed itself to more effective cooperation that positively impacts on the lives of the African citizenry.
